The four Melon file formats (and why your download isn’t a mod)
This trips up more people than anything else. Melon Sandbox uses four different file types, and they are not interchangeable — if you downloaded a .melsave expecting a character mod, it will never appear in your mods list, because it isn’t one.

All of them are ZIP archives underneath. Rename any of them to .zip and you can open it up and see what is inside. That is genuinely useful when a download misbehaves — it tells you immediately whether you actually got a mod or something else.
So if a mod “won’t install”, check what you downloaded first. A .melsave in the Mods folder will sit there doing nothing forever.
