How to Install Melon Sandbox Mods: .melmod, .melsave & Fixes
Quick answer: download the file, keep its original extension, and use Melon Sandbox’s in-game Import option when your version provides it. If the download is a normal .zip wrapper, extract the wrapper first and import the game files inside.
Reviewed 6 August 2026: this guide was checked against representative downloads from this site. Those files do not all use the same internal structure, so this page does not treat every Melon file as a renamed ZIP. Menus and compatibility can change with game updates.
People use both Melon Sandbox mods and Melon Playground mods when searching for community files. Whatever name appears on a download page, confirm the file type and the version notes before importing it.
Check the file type before installing
The extension tells the game how the download should be handled. It also tells you where to look if a file imports but does not appear where expected.
| Extension | Usual purpose | What to do |
|---|---|---|
.melmod |
Spawnable content such as a character, weapon or object | Use the game’s mod import flow where available |
.melsave |
A saved scene or contraption | Import it as a save rather than expecting it in the mod list |
.melmap |
A custom map on versions that support the format | Use the map import option provided by your version |
.melworld |
A packaged world or group of content on supported versions | Follow the instructions supplied with that download |
.zip |
A container that may hold one or more game files | Extract it and inspect the files inside |
Do not automatically rename a .melmod file to .zip
Some older tutorials say every .melmod, .melsave, .melmap or .melworld is a ZIP archive with another name. That is not reliable. In our review, representative .melmod downloads included files whose content was structured data rather than a ZIP archive.
Keep the extension supplied by the creator. Extract only a download that is actually delivered as .zip, or when the download page explicitly says it is an archive. Renaming the wrong file can make troubleshooting harder and may stop the game from recognizing it.
How to install Melon Sandbox mods
- Open the mod page and read its file list, creator credit and any compatibility notes.
- Download the file. Wait for the download to finish before opening it.
- If the download itself ends in
.zip, extract it and locate the.melmod,.melsave,.melmapor other documented game file inside. - Open Melon Sandbox and use its Import control where available. Choose the downloaded game file.
- Return to the appropriate game section: mods for spawnable content, saves for contraptions, or maps for custom locations.
- If the new content is missing, fully close and reopen the game once.
Import one new pack at a time. That makes it much easier to identify the cause if the game becomes slow, a texture is missing, or content does not appear.
Android installation
On Android, the downloaded file is normally available through your browser’s download list or the device’s Downloads app. Open the game first and look for its Import control. This avoids relying on a hard-coded Android/data path that may belong to another release, package name or store build.
- Download the file and confirm its full filename.
- Extract it only if it is a
.zipcontainer. - In Melon Sandbox, choose Import and browse to Downloads.
- Select the actual game file, not a preview image or text document included with the pack.
- For a multi-file pack, import every required game file listed by the creator.
Modern Android versions restrict direct access to parts of Android/data. If an old tutorial sends you to a folder you cannot open, do not install an unknown file manager simply to force access. Try the game’s own importer and check instructions for your exact game version.
iPhone and iPad installation
Safari normally saves downloads in the Files app. If your installed version supports file sharing, the iOS Share sheet may offer Melon Sandbox as a destination. Otherwise, open the game and use its Import control if present.
- In Files, confirm that the download completed.
- Tap a
.zipdownload once to extract it, then open the resulting folder. - Use Share only if Melon Sandbox is offered, or select the file from the game’s importer.
- Reopen the game and check the section that matches the file type.
If neither the Share sheet nor the game shows an import route, the current iOS build may not accept that file type. Do not assume that a file tested on Android will automatically work on iOS.
PC and emulator installation
PC instructions depend on how you run the game. If you use an Android emulator, move the download into the emulator’s shared storage and follow the Android import steps inside the emulated game. If you use another build, follow that build’s own import menu and folder documentation. A platform label on a third-party page is not a substitute for a real compatibility test.
How to fix a mod that does not appear
| Problem | Likely check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The download is a ZIP | The game file may still be inside it | Extract the ZIP and import the documented file inside |
| A save does not appear as a mod | The file ends in .melsave |
Look in the save or contraption area instead |
| The import finishes but nothing appears | The game may not have refreshed its library | Fully close the game, reopen it and check the correct section |
| The content appears broken | The pack may target another game version or require companion files | Import all documented parts and review the version notes |
| The game crashes after import | A recent file may be incompatible or too demanding | Remove the newest addition if possible, then test files individually |
| The file has a second extension | Your device may hide filename extensions | Inspect file details and make sure it is not something like name.melmod.zip |
Multi-file packs
A pack can include several related mods, saves, textures or instructions. Do not import every unrelated item in the extracted folder. Read the included notes and the source page, then import the game files the pack requires. Keep the original folder until the pack works so you can compare filenames later.
A mod file is different from a mod APK
A .melmod or .melsave is content intended for import into the game. An APK is an Android application package. Replacing the game with a modified APK is a different action and carries different security and account risks. You do not need a modified APK to import ordinary community files into a supported game build.

Browse files and check details first
Browse Melon Sandbox mods from the homepage, or start with maps, animals, NPCs and weapons. Each listing should be treated as a download record, not a promise that the file works on every device or game release.
Check the filename and format before downloading. Where available, also review the creator credit, compatibility note, in-game test note and original screenshot. If a page lacks those details, use extra caution and report incorrect information through the site’s contact or report page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Melon Playground was renamed to Melon Sandbox — same developer, same game, same mod format. A mod made for one works in the other. You do not need different mods for each.
Yes — every mod on MelonModHub is free. No sign-up, no payment, no survey. The download button gives you the file directly.
No. Mod files work in the normal game from your app store. A "mod APK" is a modified copy of the whole game — a different thing entirely, and it is not needed for mods. It also breaks your updates and often carries adware.
Mods use the .melmod extension (older ones may use .melsave). If your download arrives as a ZIP, extract it first — the game needs the mod file itself, not the archive.
